Description
Collection Development is a continuous process in library. Library always seeks to acquire new and the latest materials for library users. This section of library is responsible for the selection and purchase of materials and is used for acquiring books for the library from renowned booksellers & publishers. The selection of books is made by the Books Selection Committee. Readers and educational institutions suggestions are given due consideration while purchasing books for the library. A policy of book selection is followed for the purchase of books and government procedures are adopted for procurement.
Technical section performs technical operations on library material. Technical operations ensure that resources are systematically organized, accessible, and efficiently managed. These operations include cataloging, classification, labeling and automation. Cataloging involves creating comprehensive bibliographic records for each item, capturing details like title, author, subject, and publication information. This data is entered into an Integrated Library System (ILS) Koha, making the catalog searchable both in-house and online. Classification assigns call numbers using Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), enabling the logical arrangement of materials by subject. Labeling involves applying physical identifiers, such as spine labels to items, aiding in shelving and tracking. Finally, automation streamlines routine tasks like circulation, overdue notices, and inventory checks, enhancing efficiency and user experience.
Classification plays a key role to function the library. Each book is given a class number that reflects its subject and determines its place on the shelves. The class number appearing on the spines of books indicates the location of books on the shelves. It consists of at least three digits; if longer than three, the number is broken by a decimal point e.g. 300.942 and an abbreviation of three alphabets which denotes author.
The collection is arranged according to Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme. According to this scheme, the knowledge is divided into ten classes which are tabulated under:
